日本の美術作品を理解するために、今年度は、行事や風俗を描いた絵画を時代ごとに見ていく。絵画作品は、それぞれの時代のさまざまな行事や風俗を描き出し、人々の暮らしを映す鏡となっている。平安・鎌倉時代の絵巻物にみる人々の営み、襖絵や屏風絵に描かれた四季折々の行事や祭礼、江戸時代に盛行した浮世絵に活写される各地の生業、明治期の日本画や洋画において格好の題材となった変容を遂げた都市や農村の風景など、毎回、テーマを設定し具体的な作品を取り上げる。取材された土地は都のほか、地方や異国の地なども含まれる。また、描かれた行事や風俗は、必ずしも現実そのままを反映しているとは限らず、時代によっても、描いた画家や鑑賞者によっても一様ではないだろう。画像の細部を見ながら、画風や様式をもとに描かれた風俗や時代を検討するとともに、描かれた世界を読み解いていきたい。　現代においては、「作品」として美術館のなかでしか鑑賞することのできないこれらの絵画が、当時、どのような場で用いられ、どのような思いから制作され、何を伝えたかったのか、ということをそれぞれ考える機会としてもらいたい。
What is Japanese Art? This course will examine Japanese paintings from the perspective of the subject-matter (what is depicted) and space (where and how works of art were appreciated) in order to illuminate the characteristics of traditional Japanese paintings. We will explore how fūzoku or genre scenes were represented in Japanese paintings by looking at the following themes; life of people, seasonal events and festivals, production and occupation seen in the Ukiyo-e, modernization and cityscape, etc. The genre scenes were visualized on various formats of painting such as folding screens and sliding doors which decorated aristocratic mansions, castles, and temples, while depicted in picture scrolls, suitable for narrating stories. This course will cover both conceptual and realistic representation of cityscapes and explore the detailed description of the paintings. Discussion will specifically focus on the original production contexts of the works.

履修条件 Prerequisite(s)
基本的な予備知識は不要であるが、実際に美術館・博物館に訪れ、できるだけさまざまな美術作品を見てもらいたい。
Preliminary knowledge on the Japanese art is not required, but it is advisable to visit various museums to view actual artworks.

成績評価の方法及び基準 Grading Policy
学期末のレポート（70％）および授業のテーマごとのリアクションペーパー（30％）などにより総合的に評価する。
Performance evaluation of this subject will be conducted by the term-end paper (70%) and reaction papers based on each session topic (30%). Active participation is required.
